May 12, 2010: 2010 Advanced Patent & Licensing Seminar Dates Announced
BSKB has announced the dates for the annual Advanced Patent & Licensing Seminar. The 2010 APLS will be held from September 27 through October 8, 2010. March 23, 2010: Gerald Murphy, Jr. to Lecture for INFOPAT in Japan
BSKB partner Gerald Murphy, Jr. has been invited by the INFOPAT Association (Association for the Study of International & Foreign Patent & Trademark Laws & Practice) to lecture in Japan on April 15, 2010. Mr. Murphy will lecture on the use of declarations to overcome rejections, as well as prosecuting patent applications for drugs that are in clinical or pre-clinical development. March 3, 2010: MaryAnne Armstrong, Ph.D., to Lecture at American Chemical Society Meeting
BSKB partner MaryAnne Armstrong, Ph.D., will lecture at the 239th American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting in San Francisco, CA on March 22. Dr. Armstrong will share her experience in the area of intellectual property law in a session entitled Career in patent law: The intersection of science and writing. November 19, 2009: BSKB Partners to Speak at the Fourth Annual Patent Law Institute
Partners Gerald M. Murphy, Jr. and Leonard R. Svensson will speak at the upcoming 4th Annual Patent Law Institute, held in March 2010 in New York, San Francisco, and via live webcast. Mr. Murphy and Mr. Svensson will be discussing trends in patent prosecution and future trends in chemical and biotech patenting. October 29, 2009: USPTO Changes Likely to Cause Delays in Examining RCEs
As noted in the BSKB IP Update of October 21, the USPTO has decided to implement a change in docketing procedures for RCEs. As announced by Director Kappos this week, starting November 15, 2009 the USPTO will place RCE on the examiner’s continuation docket rather than on the examiner’s amended docket. Examiners will no longer be required to act on RCEs within two months of entry of the request for continued examination. Based on our experience it is likely that action on some RCEs will be substantially delayed because of this change.
BSKB is advising our clients to take this change into consideration when making the decision to file an RCE. In some instances it may be advantageous to file a RCE before November 15, 2009 to ensure prompt action by the USPTO.

September 21, 2009: BSKB Partners Lecture in Tokyo
Marc Weiner and MaryAnne Armstrong, Ph.D., partners at BSKB, will lecture in Tokyo, Japan on October 6 and 7, 2009. The lectures will be co-sponsored by UCIP (University Consortium for International Intellectual Property Coordination) and the JPAA (Japan Patent Attorneys Association), and lecture topics include Product by Process Claims, including Abbot v. July 15, 2009: Nicholas Godici Named Special Consultant to USPTO
Nicholas P. Godici, Executive Advisor at BSKB, has been named a special consultant to the USPTO by U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. Under this appointment, Mr. Godici will work with USPTO officials to identify areas of concern and to assist in the transition to a new director. More information can be found here.
