USPTO's Kristi Sawert, Ph.D., to Lecture at BSKB on New 112 2nd Guidelines

Kristi L. R. Sawert, Ph.D., will present a lecture at BSKB on 3/23/2011 on the USPTO's recent Supplementary Examination Guidelines for Determining Compliance with 35 U.S.C. § 112 published in the Federal Register in 2/2011. Dr. Sawert's presentation will focus on the agency's efforts to improve examination of claims for compliance with 35 U.S.C. § 112, second paragraph, which requires that claims particularly point out and distinctly claim the subject matter applicant regards as his or her invention. Dr. Sawert will also discuss the agency's policy regarding examination of claim limitations invoking 35 U.S.C. § 112, sixth paragraph.

Dr. Sawert is an Associate Solicitor in the USPTO's Office of the Solicitor. In that capacity, she defends decisions of the agency in Federal Court, particularly the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. She also serves as a legal advisor on examination guidelines, and worked extensively on the 2010 KSR Guidelines Update published in 9/2010 as well as the § 112 guidelines. Prior to joining the Solicitor's Office, Dr. Sawert clerked for the Honorable Chief Judge Paul R. Michel (retired), and practiced at two major Wall Street firms, specializing in patent litigation.
